Conservation: Internet links

A very large number of sites, devoted to conservation, can be found on the Internet, and their number appears to be growing rapidly. Everyone appears to be on the bandwagon, but very few sites provide good educational information.

CREO has developed standardized criteria based on taxonomy, for analyzing extinctions that can be applied across diverse taxonomic groups. It also maintains a reliable public database of extinct animals and plants.
BEN: Biodiversity Education Network, an initiative of the World Wildlife Organisation (WWF). Enhances biodiversity awareness and education through collaboration, networking, communication, and capacity building.  By bringing talented partners together, BEN serves as a clearinghouse for information and expertise and provides a forum for discussion and action.
CITES CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.
LTER: Long-Term Ecological Research, established by the National Research Foundation (NFR)  is a collaborative effort involving more than 1100 scientists and students investigating ecological processes over long temporal and broad spatial scales. The Network promotes synthesis and comparative research across sites and ecosystems and among other related national and international research programs.

MCBI Marine Conservation Biology Institute: was established in 1996 in response to the increasing worldwide loss of marine biodiversity by marine and forest conservation biologist Elliott Norse. To advance the multidisciplinary science of marine conservation biology to generate and disseminate information about marine biodiversity issues to promote alliances for protecting, restoring, and sustainably using the oceans and the life they support.
BIN21 Biodiversity Information Network of the California State University, makes information on biodiversity readily and universally accessible through a global and interdisciplinary network.

WCMC www.unep-wcmc.org/: UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre provides information for policy and action to conserve the living world, concentrating on species, forests, protected areas, marine and freshwaters; plus habitats affected by climate change such as polar regions. NRDC National Resources Defense Council, aims to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life depends, while working to restore the integrity of the elements that sustain life, defending endangered natural places, and promoting equity and fairness. NAS National Audubon Society conserves and restores natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity, already since 1905. Living Oceans is their marine conservation program, using science-based policy analysis, education, and grassroots advocacy to put science to work on behalf of marine fish and ocean ecosystems ... because fish are wildlife, too.

MSC: The Marine Stewardship Council, founded in 1997 by Unilever and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is concerned about the eco-system effects of overfishing. It now certifies fisheries which are well managed and sustainable by an ISO-4000 like process for accountability.
