CREO: Committee on Recently
Extinct Organisms of the American Museum on Natural History (AMNH);
Fosters an improved understanding of species' extinctions that have occurred
in recent times, since 1500. CREO has developed standardized criteria based
on taxonomy, for analyzing extinctions that can be applied across diverse
taxonomic groups. It also maintains a reliable public database of extinct
animals and plants.
BEN: Biodiversity Education Network,
an initiative of the World Wildlife Organisation (WWF). Enhances biodiversity
awareness and education through collaboration, networking, communication,
and capacity building. By bringing talented partners together, BEN
serves as a clearinghouse for information and expertise and provides a
forum for discussion and action.
CITES CITES (the Convention on International
Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international
agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international
trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.
LTER: Long-Term Ecological Research,
established by the National Research Foundation (NFR) is a collaborative
effort involving more than 1100 scientists and students investigating ecological
processes over long temporal and broad spatial scales. The Network promotes
synthesis and comparative research across sites and ecosystems and among
other related national and international research programs.

Institute: was established in 1996 in response to the increasing worldwide
loss of marine biodiversity by marine and forest conservation biologist
Elliott Norse. To advance the multidisciplinary science of marine conservation
biology to generate and disseminate information about marine biodiversity
issues to promote alliances for protecting, restoring, and sustainably
using the oceans and the life they support.

UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre provides information for
policy and action to conserve the living world, concentrating on species,
forests, protected areas, marine and freshwaters; plus habitats affected
by climate change such as polar regions. Also addressing the relationship
between trade and the environment and the wider aspects of biodiversity
assessment. WCMC was ounded jointly by IUCN, WWF and UNEP. Databases of
heritage parks.

of CMC, creating think-tanks and seminars to promote innovative thinking
about the complexity of the environment. Reports published on this site.
EDF Environmental
Defense Fund: links science, economics, and law to create innovative,
equitable, and cost-effective solutions to the most urgent environmental
problems, already since 1967. With its important contacts, EDF provides
the support needed to make local initiatives in conservation a success.
NRDC National Resources Defense
Council, aims to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals
and the natural systems on which all life depends, while working to restore
the integrity of the elements that sustain life, defending endangered natural
places, and promoting equity and fairness. Click on their site

NAS National Audubon Society
conserves and restores natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other
wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity,
already since 1905. Living Oceans is their marine conservation program,
using science-based policy analysis, education, and grassroots advocacy
to put science to work on behalf of marine fish and ocean ecosystems ...
because fish are wildlife, too.
WCS Wildlife Conservation Society
of the Bronx Zoo (New York) aims to save wildlife and wild lands throughout
the world, by combining the resources of wildlife parks with field projects
around the globe to inspire care for nature, while providing leadership
in environmental education, thus helping sustain our planet's biological
diversity.
